Once upon a time someone used to come and sit under the gnarled tree on the hill. But he was not as alone as he thought....

Is the dragon looking for companionship? Is it going to gobble up and eat him? Is it simply too big and old to notice another ant scrabbling over its back?

I'll let you be the judge of that.

Painted digitally over (and under) a sketch I did ages ago: [link]

Wacom tablet, Paint Shop Pro 8, and god only knows how many hours. X_x

EDIT: Blue flowers added at the very persuasive "insistence" of my mom. ^^;

EDIT EDIT: It shall look horrible and flat no more! Also made it a bit less dark...

EDIT x3: Gah... Huh... Bwuh? O_O A DD? Wow, guys... Thanks, thanks a lot. O_O

Daily Deviation

Given 2011-08-10
Legend by *Kaytara

The suggester says of this fantastical and magical piece, "Very touching scene about the heart of nature with beautiful colors."

Take time to check the gallery. Many beautiful works. I adore how *Kaytara incorporates a dragon into the landscape.... as if the dragon is silently watching you without giving itself away. ( Suggested by =Azzedar-san and Featured by `WDWParksGal )

Oh, my god. First, of all, I see no flaws whatsoever in this picture. It is absolutely perfect. I love, no, adore the dragon and the entire make up of it. It is amazing. This is absolutely amazing.

I saw this picture moments ago as a daily deviation thumbnail and thought, "Woah Nellie!"

I was afraid to critique this because there is simply nothing wrong with it and that I wouldn't be able to make it to one hundred words of typing. This art leaves me nearly speechless, and I intend to explore your gallery for more wondrous art such as this. You have just widened the horizon of my imagination. And I am very grateful for that. Thank you for creating this piece. It is truly a wonder of deviantart.com.

Hello again, folks, this is your friendly internet robot sitting on a lovely rolling hill with a (Looks behind)--AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!

Okay, folks, lemme start off with this. As far as I'm conerned, this piece, by :iconkaytara: is just genious. It combines a wonderful grasp of technique and theory with a wonderful love of the fantastic, which I love.

I'm sure we're all familiar with the famed hill from the Nightmare Before Christmas, a strange thing with a tip curling in a downward spiral. Compositionally, this calls back that same hill, though the great earthen dragon's head swoops upward instead, toward the sun, and toward our small figure lost in his own thoughts.

Technique used here is evidentally a speed paint with a special emphasis on grass textures. While it would undoubtedly be well within the artist's ability to paint individual baldes of grass, this would be somewhat inefficient, especially for such a texturally ambitious project.

Overall, this piece shows a great deal of skill combined with a love of the form. I think we painters of the fantastic can all learn something from this.

You've got a very Michael Whelan thing going on in this painting, which coming from me is very high praise. :) Beautiful stuff.

Oh, these are wonderful colours of sunset mirrored by a wonderful scene. I really like the idea of this tree-horned dragon with a back full of moss and lawn. Reminds me a little of old Morla from the neverending story. I hope it won't mind elf sitting on his back. Elf and plants go well usually.
